This Weekend: Five Boro Bike Tour

This Sunday, May 7th, I’ll be riding in the Five Boro Bike Tour, which the website claims to be “the largest recreational cycling event in the US.”

Five Boro Bike Tour 2005

This will be my first, and I’m really looking forward to it. The tour starts at Battery Park, on the southern tip of Manhattan (close to the site of the former World Trade Center, for those of you who don’t know New York), moves up 6th Avenue, through central park, up through Harlem into the Bronx, back down into Manhattan onto the FDR, down to the Queensboro Bridge (over which I ride daily), up to the northern end of Queens, down the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) into Brooklyn, and finally over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge into Staten Island, which, as my brother-in-law who will also be riding put it, “has got to be epic.”

Verrazano-Narrows Bridge

Most of these roadways are either clogged with traffic or closed to bikes altogether on any given day, so it’s a chance to see New York from a new perspective. Anyone interested can still register in person at Bicycle Habitat (244 Lafayette Street between Prince and Spring Streets) today and tomorrow between 11 AM and 4 PM. There’s more information at the official site.

And yes, there will be photos.
