Driver Under the Influence of Prescription Meds Kills Bicycling Teacher

by RL Policar

This lady right here killed an Elementary School Teacher that was riding her bicycle.

“(The driver) did not put on her brakes or anything,” said Brian Cummings, who watched from the auto dealership where he works as the Lexus slammed into Tift, throwing her from her silver and blue bicycle.

Tift, who was not wearing a helmet, was rushed to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with major head injuries. She died about 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

The driver, Janene Johns of Irvine, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, Newport Sgt. Bill Hartford said. Police suspect Johns, 52, was under the influence of a prescription medication, but declined to elaborate on the drug. Johns, who has no previous criminal record, posted the $100,000 bail Thursday morning.

The driver will probably get off with a very light sentence as did this driver, from the Las Vegas Review Journal: A woman who had Xanax in her system and drove her SUV into a bus stop killing four people March 14, 2005, must spend eight months on house arrest as part of a plea agreement. Clark County prosecutors declined to prosecute ******* on felony charges, saying there wasn’t enough evidence to definitively conclude the drug in *******’s system caused the accident. She killed one adult and three teenagers on their way to high school.
