I wasn’t living in New York in 2001 – I was still a student at Cornell then. I didn’t move here permanently until 2004, and I recognize that my experience of that time is different from the experience of the people who were living and working here at the time.

Yes, we had memorial services, and yes, the president visited and probably said some words, but for the most part, New York just went about its day. I took the subway this morning, giving my knees the day off to recover from yesterday’s century, and Times Square station was noticably empty for rush hour on a Monday morning. Other than that, today was the same as any other day.

It’s important to remember 9/11, but I think it’s also important to remember that there are people who experienced it firsthand, and who do not need to be reminded to remember. There are many for whom the experience is still too close, and who for today, would rather just not think about it.
