I just picked up a copy of Bike for Life (which promises to help you be able to ride 100 miles at 100 years old). It covers a lot of useful information including how to avoid knee pain, not only through glucosamine but also through yoga, stretching and weight lifting. They go over all the other issues that could cause knee pain, including bike fit. They also cover some of the major issues that can affect cyclists, primarily osteoporosis; their theory is that cyclists sweat a lot and lose calcium that way, so extra calcium is a must. It's a book I'd definitely recommend (ISBN 1569244510); no relationship to the authors other than a happy reader.

In addition to glucosamine, I also take a couple of tablets of cod liver oil every day, and have a seafood snack every day (and drink the oil from that). If I don't, I find my joints get really crackly.

Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a shot. I have nothing to loose but the pain.

Be careful with taking MSM. It's a great anti-inflammatory, but it's also a pain reliever and could dull the pain and can make you think you're not as injured as you really are.

I used glucosamine and MSM at one time for my knee pain, sure enough it worked. But you have to maintain it, meaning you need to keep taking them every day just like vitamins.

I second the Glucosamine suggestion - I've broken a shoulder and found that it helped a lot with the recovery. I used it after finding it recommended on weightlifting forums for helping retain/build tendon strength.

Sure, it could have been a placebo (I'm not about to break the other shoulder to find out), but the physio said my recovery from a grade III sprain without surgery has been amazing. I'm a believer in doing all that can be done to help recovery - at least give it a shot and see if it helps.

You should try taking Glucosamine Chondroitin. It's an over the counter supplement to help your joints. Dave takes it for his knee and it helps him alot. Try it, old man!!!
