A Family That Rides Together, Stays FIT Together
by RL PolicarBANKS — Jerry Smith has a simple, low-cost and fun-packed solution for families who want to stay fit: Go biking.
“It’s disturbing if you stop and think about the problem of obesity in children,” said the Milwaukie grandfather. “But, rather than just talking about exercising, we need to go out and show them that this is the way we do it.”
Last month, Smith and his 9-year-old grandson, Jordon, shared a tandem bike as they cruised along with other families and solo riders on a 10-mile ride around Sauvie Island. Along the way, they saw wildlife, made friends and burned a few calories.

Even though it has turned cooler, my two youngest are still riding their bikes to school when I leave for my commute. I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying the company and my middle schooler is off his ADD meds and doing better this year. I credit the morning bike ride for that.
I’m trying to get the whole family to see trips of 3 miles are less are much nicer on a bike…
Wow. That’s very encouraging to hear Warren.
So RL when are WE going for our next family ride????
