Part of my commute goes through the flat section of a local mountain bike trail. Cuts a mile or two off my commute and saves 5 minutes. I use a Surly Crosscheck (which has 29ers of course) built up currently as a single speed. Sorry Nick, haven't had my stted 'fixed' yet:) While I don't know my tire specs off the top of my head, they're wider, but not as wide as mtb tires. The middle of the tire tread is fairly smooth with more aggressive tread on the sides for cornering in the trails. Perfect setup for my commute. Fast on the street, yet able to fly through the trails and corner without the fear of losing traction. Of course with the current tire setup, it is not really meant for aggressive mountain biking.

I know it won't make much of a difference on full- or front-suspension bikes, but I'd like to know the difference in weight between a 29" wheel and a 26" wheel.

Rydman....

That's EXACTLY what I am talking about! Using a 29r for a commuter and you can even use it for some single track!

Thanks Rydman!

I visit this site regularly because I am a commuter and a bike enthusiast. Funny enough my 26er commuter got stolen last week, sad I know. I ride a 29er mountain bike, so my thought was to build a 29er commuter. I currently ride a Gary Fisher Rig, so I have been checking out GF's Dual Sport line of bikes, which is the same geometry of their 29er line, with front suspension and skinny tires. They also have the Fast City line which is more commuter like rigid and skinny tires. Schweet bikes. I looked at a lot of other brands and these fit exactly what I was looking for at a resonable price. Sorry for the long comment.

Though, yeah, you do need a bike with the clearance to accept said tires, which is what a "29er" refers to - the bike, not just the wheel.

Yeah, it's just 700c rims with fat tires, if I'm not mistaken.

anonymous relax...

The 29r bikes that I am talking about are mountain bikes such as the KHS Tucson. Yes I know that hybrids, and road bikes have "29r" wheels. But for the most part you really can't use them as a dual purpose bike.

A 29r would make an awesome commuter due to its wheel diameter, and the fact its a mountain bike, heck you can take it out on the weekends on any trail.
