San Luis Obispo Bicycle Safety Day This Saturday

by Warren T

I wish I was there instead of in the frozen mess in the Midwest…

In order to honor the memory of bicycle safety advocate Bob Garing, the San Luis Obispo Bicycle Club and the County Bike Coalition have designated Saturday as “Bicycle Safety Day.”

This article in the San Luis Obispo Tribune states:

“Garing, who died in May 2005, was an outspoken advocate who believed bicyclists are safest when they blend with motor vehicles and obey the vehicle code.”

There are several great quotes in the article, including:

“Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles.” “The best bike facility is our road systems with some improvements like wider roads, turning lanes and bike sensitive signals.”

Sounds like a wonderful way to honor an amazing man.

“frozen mess”: The Central Coast has been dipping into below-freezing temps at night. The weather service has issued a “winter weather advisory” in my county because of freezing temps. Santa Clara County actually CLOSED ROADS because of “patches of ice”!!!

The freezing temps have been bad for agriculture — billions in crops destroyed by the frost — but for the rest of us it’s just a little chilly. Still, many people look in awe at me because I actually biked to work in this awful weather!

At least my buddy who is constantly wanting to talk about global warming has backed off a bit.

I’ve talked with some folk in Oklahoma and Texas today and they’re in a world of hurt too — especially in Texas in areas where they’ve never really had to drive on the ice before. Remember, turn into the slide…

I’m hoping they have marvelous weather for the SLO ride though.
