Arleigh, we'd love to see those rack that you mentioned. Fritz, you are on the mark. It is about the derth of bike decent bike parking: Racks that are safely placed, permits truely-secure locking, and look good. The contest is over but the impetus remains.

Let me add that the industry group APBP have rack guidelines, and that some municipalities will install back racks for businesses for free!

Thanks for discussing this topic. Thanks, commutebybike.com for your good work. Cheers!

No photos, sorry; and I don't live in Colorado any more.

I'd imagine the point of the contest is to point out the good, the bad and the ugly in bike parking. So many people are not aware of what good parking is and just put up with what's available rather than engaging the imagination with the possibilities. Most bike parking is something like a local Wal-Mart with only a rutted mud parking lot that also doubles as a cattle feed lot. Most cyclists put up with it because we don't even know what it's like to have real bike parking.

Of course, one of the advantages of a bike is that it can be locked to a variety of things, and it can be rolled into the store if no parking is available.

I can't think of any great bike racks here (functional, yes, awesome, no), but it does sure seem like I'm good at finding the bad ones.

I really really really like the recycled car steering wheels that are attached to the parking meters in Boulder, Colorado for bicycle parking.
