Fort Collins bike library opens
by Richard MasonerThe Fort Collins, Colorado Bike Library opened earlier this month. The Bike Library, which is run by the city of Fort Collins bike program, currently has 50 bikes available for for anyone to use for free for up to seven days at a time. Unlike the automated bike kiosk rentals available in Europe, planned for Washington DC and now available in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Fort Collins Bike Library depends on volunteer staffing at its two locations.

I volunteered at the bike library a couple weekends ago, and it was a lot of fun. It was great to see the enthusiasm for the program.
Please take note that the Fort Collins Bike Library is a collaboration between the City of Fort Collins and BikeFortCollins.org, a local bicycle advocacy group that has been instrumental in salvaging the city’s bicycle coordinator position from the chopping block. BikeFortCollins.org initiated the proposal for the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant and administers the program under the supervision of FC Bikes, the bike program of the City. Thanks for the note on the background, Oriello. I was previously somewhat familiar with the role of Bike Fort Collins but didn’t didn’t realize how cruicial its involvement was in saving the bike coordinator position.

…it creates a positive statement in the eyes of the general public that there is both an opportunity & a need for intelligent bicycle use in america, beyond recreational use…
