Manitoba Bike Commuter Rides 112 Miles a Day

by Warren T

Wow! Simply, wow.

CBC News has a feature up about a guy riding 112 miles (round trip) twice a week. Doing the math, he averages a little over 22 MPH.

Mike Caslor says “My office mates think I’m a little bit crazy. But in many ways, part of the reason I do this is to encourage other people to cycle.”

Now that, my friends, is a serious commute.

Favorite quote:

“The vast majority of the people I work with don’t live 90 kilometres from work. They live nine kilometres from work so they have no excuse: Get on the bike and bike to work.”

Reminds me of this guy. He’s an attorney near San Francisco that RUNS to work for a 46 mile round trip. Twice a week.

Hey, more power to him! That’s pretty much a Tour de France stage two days a week! Well, I want everyone to know I commuted by bike five days straight this last week, three of those days had rains of deluge proportions. My rain cape kept my upper body dry, but my shoes, socks and pants were soaked. The last day I wore rainboots, but water got into those, too.

A 100 mile commute sounds like a good candidate for the hot road bikes we talked about the other day :-)

I rode 32 miles today (total morning and evening distance) and thought I did well :-)

This is a nice media story, but too easily written off as a wacko. Don’t really think it helps the cause much.

  5. Cafiend says:

True dat, Fred. The non-cyclists’ excuse machine is very well developed. A super-athlete riding a distance that even many dedicated cyclists would consider discouraging is just a freak show to many observers.

    Awesome effort, though.
