Xtracycle open source specs now online

by Richard Masoner

As promised, Xtracycle put their longtail bike frame specifications online as part of their project to open source their longtail frame design. They’ve created a Longtail Standard and logoing to allow vendors to design their products to fit in the Xtracycle Free Radical ecosystem. The Longtail Logo can be used on bikes, accessories or packaging.

Xtracycle has already approached the other existing longtail bike manufacturers about this standard and, according to Xtracycle, they’ve gotten a mostly positive response from them.

Yes! Thanks for this post. I can’t wait to get the new Kickback. I must be seriously hooked into my X… I shouted with glee when I saw and read about it.

    …that’s a very open, intelligent & progressive approach…

I’ve been hoping for something like this for quite a while. There are a number of bikes in this longtail or cargo class coming out from a number of different manufacturers. Lock in as far as accessories go is a bad thing for consumers, and bad for the market segment. This open standard is a good idea and good for the manufacturers and the consumer.

  4. Howdy! I just want to give an enormous thumbs up for the good information you may have here on this post. I shall be coming back to your blog for more soon.
