Dailymile goes public beta

As I’ve said before, I’m a numbers freak, and I’m also a bit of a social media hound. I’m still using my spreadsheet to keep track of my miles, but a while back ago, I got an invite to help shake the bugs out of dailymile, a multi-sport portal that bears some resemblance to Brightkite, Twitter, and Bikejournal, but with a little more flexibility. Today, they opened the floodgates for everyone. It’s no longer an invite-only service. Since I’ve enjoyed using it the past six months, I figured I’d share now that anyone can join.

Obviously, this won’t interest everyone. Those who don’t care much for this whole “web 2.0 social interwebs” stuff, those who already use some other online journal, and the like. If you do more than just ride (for instance, you’re into 100 Pushups or jogging as well as bike commuting) or you don’t currently keep track of your training, you’ll probably find dailymile to be enjoyable.

I’ve mentioned dailymile in passing on my own site before. They’ve added a lot of features and really come into their own in the past few months. At first glance, it looks like a place for athletes and fitness freaks to flex their muscles and compete with one another. The truth is that like many social networking sites, you can leverage it however you want. I share photos I take along the way (which keeps me motivated), I find others who are interested in commuting (dailymile even has a bicycle commuters group!) and I get to share and read links with people who have similar interests. If you’re not keeping track of your training and mileage, dailymile also gives you the opportunity, as that was what it was originally designed for.

    When Kelly first sent me an invite for dailymile, I thought it wouldn’t be as useful as weEndure or some other site that allows you to track every possible fitness detail. In reality, not having all those details made it easier to keep logging miles, which made doing the miles easier, so then I wanted to log more miles. Having my friends do the same was a great positive feedback loop. Highly recommended if you exercise regularly but arn’t too concerned with elite level performance.

    I may have to look. This is not going to be one of those sites that is free today and then pay in the future. Now that my bitterness is out of the way, I may look into it. I use a spreadsheet that many of my running and biking buds have copied but this may peak my interest going back online to track a few items.

    Neither myself or Commute By Bike are part of Dailymile. We just write about stuff that would interest those who commute by bike. If you’re having trouble, I’d suggest the following two links:
