Step-by-step – Extrawheel Voyager

Welcome to the step-by-step instructional blog for the Extrawheel Voyager. The Voyager is the second single wheeled trailer by Extrawheel, the classic version was a slightly heavier model that used large dry bags and cargo nets to hold your items to the trailer, both models use the same carrying configuration by holding the weight of your cargo on the sides of the wheel for better stability and balance when conquering rough terrain. Both models have excelled in adventure touring and off road cycling because of their high clearance and ability to track directly behind the bike with a very minimal footprint.

The first thing you want to do after opening your package is to check and see if you have all the necessary parts to the trailer. Below is a parts list for all the items that should be in the box.

1 Extrawheel Frame
1 Mounting Fork
1 Quick Release Skewer

1 Fender
2 Struts
1 Auxiliary Strut
1 Fender Bracket
1 Small Parts Bag

See picture #1

The above list is what comes with all standard Voyager trailers. If you ordered a wheel with your Extrawheel Voyager, the wheel along with tire and tube are included. The Voyager also has the option of coming with panniers. If your order those, double check to see if they are in the box as well.

Inside the small parts bag you will have the following:

5 Mounting Bolts
6 Rubber Washers
2 Large Washers
2 Small Washers
1 Fender Bracket Nut
1 Long Fender Bolt
1 Fender Nut Spacer
1 2.5mm Hex Wrench
1 3mm Hex Wrench
2 Fork Bolts

See picture #2

1. The first step is attaching the struts to the fender. Slide the ends of the strut into the black attachment clips. Tighten the black clips enough so that the strut doesnt slide out.
2. Second step is attaching the fender bracket and auxiliary strut to the fender. Take the fender bracket and slide it on the other side of the fender from the struts. See picture #3 for details. Slide the bracket about 5.5 up the fender, measured on from the outside edge. Now you are ready to attach the auxiliary strut to the bracket by using one of your 5 mounting bolts, the 2 large washers and the fender bracket nut. The Washers should be placed on either side of the auxiliary strut and the bracket tab. See picture #4.

3. Now that you have the fender and Struts assembled you are ready to attach the fender to the Extrawheel Frame. You will need the remaining 4 mounting bolts, 6 rubber washers, 2 small washers, long fender bolt and the fender nut spacer. Start by laying the fender and frame on their sides then place one of the rubber washers over the eyelet at the end of the fork of the frame. Next, align the fender strut over the rubber washer and tighten the mounting bolt to hold the strut in place. Do this on the other side of the frame as well. See picture #3.

4. The next step is attaching the auxiliary strut, once again use the mounting bolts and place a rubber washer between the frame and the auxiliary strut. Only hand-tighten the bolt so the fender can move up and down a bit on the frame so you can align the fender tab with the hole at the top of the fork. Using the remaining parts, 1 long fender bolt, 1 fender nut spacer and 2 rubber washers slide 1 of the rubber washes on the long fender bolt and then slide the bolt into the hole on the fender tab from the underside, then slide the other rubber washer down the bolt and followed by the bolt spacer. Tighten the long fender bolt down to the frame and then tighten the auxiliary strut bolts to the frame. See picture #5.

5. Now that you have your fender mounting to the frame you are ready to attach the Extrawheel Mounting Fork to the frame. To do this, simply spread the ends of the mounting fork and clamp them over the ball joints at the top of the frame.

Extrawheel has released its own set of panniers with the Voyager, the Expert Panniers and Dry Panniers are both excellent bags and work fantastically with the Voyager. For my Voyager however, I would get a set of Arkel T-42s, when rolling though the woods I want something I know will take some punishment and keep on going and with Arkel and Extrawheel you know youve got an unbeatable combination.
