Take a look at the new Torker Cargo-T bicycle available from your Local Bike Shop in the United States.

Seattle Bike Supply has apparently listened to their customers with cargo bikes, because the Cargo-T with its 4130 Chromoly frame and fork has very practical features like a sturdy center kickstand, a step through frame, chainguard and fenders. Other features are a rear coaster brake and front roller brake, headset lock (to keep the front end stable as you load and unload the bike), Sturmey-Archer 3 speed hub and a bell.

Besides this eye catching flourescent green, the Torker Cargo-T is also available in satin gray.

The Torker Brand is distributed through Seattle Bike Supply, so any bike shop in the USA using SBS as their distributor can order this bike through their catalog. MSRP is $599.99, which seems like a pretty good deal to me.

    Ahhh! bike porn that I dream of! I think a 8 speed interanl hub with roller brake would be nice on that bike, and of course a leahter saddle…. : )

  6. In fact, Torker borrowed the design from it’s Dutch cousin, Batavus.

    Here is the Batavus version of the same bike … the paint scheme shown is a little more “militant”, but it also comes in orange and black.

    This bike is a bit of an upgrade with a Shimano 3-speed drivetrain and dynamo powered headlamp. After all, it is made in Holland not China.

    The more I look at this bike the more I like it. If you can get past the hideous green paint job. This bike has good bones. Its a nice stylish steel frame with a component list that is competent for the $640 price. And let us not forget components come and go. For the price you can always upgrade hubs and wheels, along with adding a dyno lighting system and leather saddles at your pace and as your budget allows.

    Now all I have to do is convince our LBS’s to actually stock them.

    Jax: The bike is just something from the SBS catalog so they shop can order it from the distributor. And it’s “one size fits most” so there aren’t any funky fit issues, unless you fall outside the category of “most.”

    Fritz, I’m aware that they can order it through SBS. But our local LBS’s don’t seem to understand why someone would want a bike that isn’t a mountain, road, or hybrid. Hell, half of our LBS’s are Fisher dealers, they don’t even stock Simple City’s.

    To our shops, carrying anything other than a Camelback or water bottle on a bike is best moved by car. Some of the most fun you can have in Jacksonville is going into bike shops and asking for a specific make and model of city or cargo bike. Nothing is more enjoyable than watching the shop employees eyes glaze over from the brain overload that comes as they try and figure out, (A) what either of those bike are, and (B) how they are going to convince you that you don’t want either and really need a hybrid or modified mountain bike instead.

    I love my city, I truly do.

    It’s kind of like a smaller SUB, somewhere between the Xtracycle and a regular bike with a rack on the back. One could fit a lot of groceries on this thing. And, yeah, $640 ain’t bad at all, thought I do agree with bike Jax that the green is quite hideous…

    I actually talked to a long-time SBS outside rep and apparently these are basically a Bakfiets design made in Taiwan.

    I’ve seen it in person and I can vouch that it’s entirely badass!!

    Also check out the U-District from Torker. $350 retail for a flip/flop single speed. Totally killer!

    So I’m totally lusting over this bike. I’ve got a beat up old mtn bike with a rack on the back I use for cargo. But how do you mount a light on the front if you’ve got a load on the front? Bryan @ Renaissance, I was looking at the picture on your site, and it looks like even an empty milk crate would block (or at least somewhat obscure) a light mounted on the handlebar. Any thoughts?

    Concerning mounting a light, you could go with a helmet mount, or perhaps mount one to the rack itself. Also,I use a mount on my fork for a white blinkie, as I have a light on my helmet.

    Yes, all of burnseys suggestions are good.

    In addition, if you follow the link to the Bright Green Cargo-T, you’ll notice a dynamo mount on the left fork. This would be another good landing point for an out-of-the-way light.

    Another option might be the Gino Light Mount from Paul Component Engineering. It’s a little doodad that screws into any 5mm mount to provide a mounting point for handlebar mount headlights.

    Just talked with SBS regarding the front rack and centerstand: they’re not available separately right now. They’d first like to sell enough Cargo-T bikes, but would consider making the front rack and centerstand available individually if they can be convinced there’s demand for these things.

    Bike weight is 45 lbs.

    I don’t know what the horror is about the green. I LIKE the green paint! Yes it sears drivers retinas, if they are looking at the road at all, but whats wrong with that? Reminds me of a Kawasaki Dirt bike..
