JD, you just pegged me. I've got a SWEET, tricked out Special'ed commuter built 100% for comfort and utility; and I'm always looking for an excuse to choose it over the car. But as I walk past the car, I walk past that bike too... To take the less desired but more frequently used bike (my retired racing bike).

It's all about speed - a one day weekend and a 20mile (oneway) weekly commute places a premium on time. Maybe the answer we're all seeking as a 30-hr day or 8-day week. :)

Those are great points. It took me a long time before I realized that I didn't have to be going fast. Going up a hill in granny gear slowly is still faster than walking.

It is not the bike, it is the speed. Cycle Chic is actually a good place to start to realize this. They are all going slow, not always stylish, but slow.

In the USA, fast = stylish. A new bike will not get the O and Apple seal of approval until they have market that will accept whatever they are selling. The market, the mindset of those adults not riding a bike, has to change first. 6-10mph is 3 times faster than walking and still faster than rush hour traffic. When everyone realizes that it is not a race then we can focus on integrated bike locks, IGH, and lockable on bike storage.

It is not a race.
For commutes of 5 miles or less you do not need to ride fast enough to work up a lather of sweat.

I get passed by CAT 6 racers everyday on the way to work and am probably still on the job at the same time because I don't cycle fast enough that I change clothes.

Until the ride home, then I'm taking some scalps.
