Ted, I'm so glad that you got to that last tid bit of wisdom. You are not marketing the dark arts. BSH isn't selling sugar-frosted crunchy junk to kids or sub-prime mortgages to stary-eyed, unsophisticated homeowner wannabees. It's bicycles and bike trailers and a potentially healthier, more economical, more fulfilling mean to get to where you have to go. Maybe Detours sells a pretty bag but that pretty bag might also attach really well to the handlebars of someone needs to find a way to make bicycles functional for her commute, otherwise she's going to have to buy a car that she might not really be able to afford. Great power rests in the hands of marketers but you are using your power for good and not evil.

Many years ago I had a couple of Mormon Elder kids come by the house to tell me the good news and save me from myself. One was riding a early 70's high end road bike, All Campy Nuevo Record, Cinelli bar and stem, Regina chain and free wheel and new low end tubular tires as the originals most likely rotted away. It had been sitting in some local LDS member' basement for decades who "lent" it to the kid, I mean Elder to get around on. The Elder wanted to sell the bike to me. I took it to the bike shop where I worked and via records and tubular sales, was able to get in touch with the owner (small Island). Boy was he pissed.

I love the way you intermingled the play with Interbike.

In the article "A look at the US cycling industry" on bikeradar.com they seem say that bike shops are the biggest deterent to getting people on bikes. Bike shops cater to seasoned bikers and as bikes get more expensive, upper income enthusiasts.

“We’ve got to get more women on bikes and they want to ride bikes. Shimano made a $5 million effort in researching their automatic shifting system to figure out what it was going to take to sell more bikes to middle-aged women in this country, because we don’t – we’re still 80 percent white and male. We don't represent the multicultural diversity of the nation or the gender aspect [of our population]."

“Shimano did the industry a great favor, they exposed and gave away a lot of the research when they launched their Coasting product. The big issue is that women who want to get back into cycling don’t want to shift , [some] may be afraid of it. Shimano gave them an answer but the shop rats dissed it. Even Trek couldn’t force it through.”

It was just too perfect that the first comment to this post would be spam for a get-rich-quick scam. I scrambled the URL to deny the Charlatan mazin his clicks and SEO, but let the comment through.
