It makes sense though. As Mr. Adams states, a bicycle is in fact a very important part of a young person's life so, the loss of Herman Mankiewicz's bike must have been a traumatic experience. Too bad he didn't keep the bike as that symbol of "lost innocence" in the movie but as we all know bicycles are not flamable! A wood sled thrown in a fireplace is!!
