Ted, we may not all agree with your riding on the sidewalk for a portion of your commute, but you own it like a boss!

I would mount all that and more on my helmet, all the time, except for the unshakable concern that in the event of an actual crash, all of those gadgets would become embedded in my skull, and make my demise the subject of a short-lived yet hilarious internet meme slash reality TV video clip, which is not the way I want to go.

I'm with you on NPR. I listen on my 16 mile commute every day while getting smarter AND in shape.

I'm with you Mike and BluesCat. I commute with one earphone (right) in and on pretty low that I can hear all the traffic and so that its volume is about that or lower of ambient noise. See, I never consider my commute a relaxing, solve-the-world's-problems time anyway so I may as well listen to NPR (or whatever) and learn about the world's problems (see what I did there?)

However, when I go on all day century rides, with or without a group, that is when I ride silently. Of course, I am often more concerned with the cue sheet but I find time to let my mind wonder. Actually, I tend to do the most thinking while climbing the hills. Next thing I know, I am at the top.

On the solo centuries, I carry headphones with me in case I get bored but I have yet to pull them out.

I'm going to take some flack, but I ride with earphones. Airdrives, actually. They're an ear speaker which sits on the tragus of the ear and projects sound into the ear canal, but allows external sound to be heard. My pair has an inline mic. If I get a call, I press a button on the mic and take the call. 12 bucks.

Let's hope this never takes off. The solution for distracted drivers is not to add distracted riders to the mix. The same rules for how the mind wanders when engaged in conversation apply. And I'll second what BluesCat said. If riding my bike becomes like every other part of the day, what's the point?

If you're with another ride and you need to talk, pull up alongside, and actually talk. I've never had that connection fail.

Ugh! One of my favorite things about riding is it is some of the ONLY time I have during the day to be by myself and not be disturbed. I have solved so many of the world's problems in those moments of solitude.

If my cell phone isn't off, then it is in a bag somewhere on the bike; out of sight, out of reach, out of mind, etc.
