Interesting. I may have gone to high school with Jeff Looker. Architect, string instruments? Sounds like Jeff.

Anyway, I commuted 9 miles one way on a cheap consumer Dahon folder (bought at Target) that I modified with higher gears, better brakes, and an aero mountain bike handlebar. I stowed it under my desk at work. These things can make nice commuter bikes. School kids on busses, however, would make fun of me. :^)

Loved this! I was contacted by Brompton when we were planning to shoot our video on the NYC Bike Path. We ended up with a very reasonably priced Green Zone Alloy Folding Bike. Our pro mechanic even commented on the beautiful welds and solid quality. If it's going to have small wheels, it better fold up! It came with a canvas bag so I was able to fold it up and take it on the train. It was a bit much to carry up the station stairs but it did work well on the Bike Path and lanes. I had lots of company too. Tons of foldies on the Greenway!
