<blockquote>When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.

Yes, you can expect a backlash. My 15 yr old refuses to ride his bike now. However, I don't press the issue, and I figure his situation in life may just dictate terms to him where he decides to ride a bike again. Funny how stupid dad is when you live with him, but how smart the old man gets when you move out and have to tackle the world on the world's terms!

Unfortunately in Malta (Europe), roads are still considered so dangerous for bikes that parents actively discourage kids from cycling. So we have whole generations who didn't learn to ride a bike. The knowledge gap is worrying, more so the relational gap between fathers (and mothers) passing on and enjoying learning riding and fixing skills together.

Happy fathers day to all those cyclists out there - pass it on :)

My little 20-month-old granddaughter points and calls it "Gambike!" So her grandfather and the bicycle are forever fused together as a single entity.

Not too shabby, eh?

Happy Fathers day Ted, Steve, and, especially, Josh.

My own father is a late-in-life cyclist. Although, he started late, he's been really getting into it.

He adores his retro-looking Electra.

Regards,
Cullen
