Joel,
I like the idea of having back up lighting for my bike but not sure how that would work especially in the winter with batteries. I'm glad to know Cygolite has good service. It has been a great year biking... why didn't I start years ago! Thank you for your input and encouragement.

mwmike - I, too, round trip about 16 miles to work and back in Phoenix. We are obnoxiously lucky that our temps only get down to around 40°F in the winter, as a rule.

Just guessing, but I suspect when you get down to around 0°F or below, those AA's will croak pretty quickly!

Shanna shames you and me with her toughness and fortitude. Think about the fact that she REGULARLY comes home to house which is about 25°F. It would be like you and me coming home, REGULARLY, to a house running around 115°F in the middle of August!

Why would anyone tolerate such pain and suffering. My 16mi RT daily commute in metro Phoenix sometimes gets down to 40 degrees! And I need a headlight for 4-6 weeks/year! My Planet Bike Blaze is awesome, but I have to buy 2-AA batteries every couple of years.

Shanna,

Once again, a well documented story using observations gleamed from what I think is an amazing commute.

I have used the Cygolite Expillion 410 since last May in conjunction with a Cygolite Hotshot, Planet Bike RadBot, and Bell 3xAA 5LED white front light.

Pros: Tremendous amount of light for the weight, very adjustable, easily recharged from various sources.

Cons: Still evaluating the long term reliability.

The light worked flawlessly for close to six months and then stopped working. I contacted Cygolite service and they were excellent. After receiving the light with proof of purchase, my light was repaired and shipped to me within 48 hours from California. Was I disappointed that the light failed: yes. Was I impressed that an American company was responsive when their product failed: yes. Since the repair, the light has again worked flawlessly. If it works for at least one more year, I believe that I have purchased a very good product which is economical and safe. I would very much like this company to succeed if only because I believe their product is reasonably priced and American made.

After reading your article (certainly far more than a normal post), I would advise you to install a second Cygolite to augment your primary helmet light. Should one fail, you have an automatic back-up and in my case, should one fail, you have your back-up to use while your primary is being repaired.

Wonderful job describing your journeys. I have not encountered a moose on my travels (which I heard can approach the weight of a small car) but I have had a few close encounters with ten point bucks around mating season. These big boys could make mince-meat out of me and my bike should they become aggressive. I think my blinking Cygolite that early dawn morning convinced them that I was not another buck looking for a mating brawl.

I enjoy your information.

Did I tell you that I like to ride my bike?
