WINDEX!. Squeak a flat head screw driver under the edge of an old grip, and drip in some windex, work it down, and you can fairly easily remove any old grip.

I have a can of Aqua Net hairspray on my tool bench for grip installation and removal. When its wet, it will loosen the grips and allow them to slide on or off easily. When it's dry, it holds the grips in place.

You just have to pull up the grip with a screwdriver just enough to get the nozzle directly into the gap.

But if you are going to discard your old grips, the easiest way to remove them is to take a box cutter and just slit them lengthwise.

Great summary! BTW, if you had gone to the bike shop they probably would have used compressed air to remove your old grips in 20 seconds. Just poke the air nozzle under the edge of the grip, apply some air, and twist off the grips. Works good for installation, to.
