30 Days of Biking

Spring has officially arrived, though many of you may not exactly feel too springy yet, since the weather has continued to be pretty harsh throughout most of the country. Although here in Arizona, we’ve been having one of the warmest, driest winters on record, so we’ve been watching the rest of the country shiver while we enjoy the sunshine. But don’t worry, we’ll pay for it come fire season and summer. In fact, if you have any extra rain/ snow to send our way, that would be fantastic.

Anyhow, it’s getting to be that time of year where you get to dust off the trusty steed, pump up the tires, and get ready for some spring riding. That is if you haven’t been toughing it out all winter, of course. And props to those that have!

But if spring brings renewed motivation to ride, there’s an advocacy campaign in April just for you! 2014 will be the 5th year of 30 Days of Biking, which is “a pledge to ride your bike every day in April, however far you want, no matter the weather!”

What’s cool about 30 Days of Biking is that it starts with a simple pledge, which brings you into the fold of a community of “joyful cyclists”. Even if this community is virtual, it’s still fun to log your riding, interact with other participants, and help provide and harness that motivation to ride. And so far, 4341 (at the writing of this post) people have signed up from around the world.

If you’re not convinced, the nice part is that you don’t have to commit to a set distance of any kind. You can ride as much or as little as you like, as long as you try to ride everyday. And if you have to skip a day, that’s cool, just make it up in May, which just so happens to be National Bike Month and another good reason to ride. That’s my advice, anyways.

And if you already ride everyday regardless of some Internet campaign or not, that’s cool, but there’s no harm in signing up to help others achieve the same tenacity and consistency.

For my own part, I’m going to sign up. Actually, I just did. But it’s a bit odd for me to be thinking about riding everyday, because I work from home, and honestly, there are some days where there’s just no reason for me to go anywhere except the gym, which is within walking distance. But I’ve signed up, and I’ll be honest with you. I’m not promising that I’m going to ride just for the sake of riding, but what I will promise is to make sure when I could take the car, that I will take the bike instead (for the most part). And April is very, very, very windy in Flagstaff, AZ, so that’s actually going to take some motivation when the pine trees are bent over at a 45 degree angle into the wind.

So there you have it. Happy spring riding, and share your experiences on the social medias at 30 Days of Biking if you’re participating!
