My wife has a 2007 Townie 3S. Hers has a front suspension fork which seems to be gone as an option in 2008. Things I like are ample eyelets for racks and fenders, flat-foot riding position, easily adjustable handlebar and seat height. Electra sells quite a few Townie-specific accessories including cargo racks and other commuting stuff. We added Electra's townie-labeled rack and trunk bag.

These bikes are super comfortable. I don't think I'd want to commute on one, but for a leisurely ride, or for just getting around town without a hurry, I think that this would be a great bike.
