I really like the way these look - it reminds me of a time when I could go and buy a decent single speed or three speed Schwinn brand new at the dealer for a few hundred dollars. Does anyone know anything about the quality of the newer Schwinns? I've been commuting on a modified department store Schwinn for a little over a year, and it's held up fine, but the components are definitely low end. How do the non-department store Schwinn's compare?

This is the type of bike that I have been looking for, but they all seem to have coaster brakes. Does anyone know of a step through three speed in this style without the coaster?

I commute 20 miles daily on my Schwinn SuperSport GS purchased two years ago for around $700.00. It is a flat bar road bike, 700 x 28 wheels, aluminum with a carbon fork and crank. The rear derailer is Shimano 105 nine speed. To date it is a dream bike. The daily commute is punishing in Pittsburgh with potholes and road trash. With nearly 4000 miles on the bike, it is holding up magically. Very stable and dependable with virtually no maintenance. Perfect commuter bike. Paul

Bike shop Schwinns are on par with anything else you'd see in a bike shop. While you can order (and occasionally see in the store) bike shop level bikes from a box store, the ones sold there are nowhere near the quality of even the cheapest bike shop bike. For that matter, there are rarely more than one size of any given model. I worked at Performance for a year and was always impressed with the 200 dollar level Schwinns and how well they came together at that price.

Megan, ask your LBS about the Sun Cyckel. It's a 3 spd internal with no coaster and a nice lugged frame. They offer a step-through frame if you are interested, too. They should be available to just about any small shop.
