I spent years riding off-the-rack bikes. There's nothing at all wrong with that, but I always found something in the manufacturer's spec I didn't like---either the components weren't all "nice", or the saddle was wrong, or the bar was too narrow. I have carpal tunnel syndrome so I need a high bar bike.
My LBS is a Gunnar dealer. I considered a Waterford but Gunnar is much more affordable. The price with upgraded paint was $1100 for frame/fork, which is a SCREAMING deal for a US made steel frame and fork. Gunnar is excellent to deal with, and there's a good chance you'll speak to Richard Schwinn when you call.
It's durable as well. I was hit by a truck last year and the bike escaped with only a paint chip. A trip to Gunnar for a repaint and it was good as new.
Downside? It's too nice. I built it as a commuter but I hate to ride it in the rain. If I do I have to spend an hour detailing it when I get home. I know people who believe that a commuter should be one's nicest bike, because it gets ridden the most. I disagree. Riding a super nice bike is a hassle when it comes to doing anything but commuting to and from work. If I'm on the Gunnar and I want to stop somewhere, I'm fearful. Fearful of theft, vandalism, and paint damage in the rack.

My bike is set up Rivendell-style. Shimano 105 deraileurs, Ultegra long reach brakes, Sugino XD crankset, 46cm Nitto Noodle bar, Cinelli cork tape, SKS fenders, Brooks B17 saddle, a Tubus Vega rack and Carradice Kendal panniers. Nothing flashy or super high tech, but nice solid components that will last forever.
The bike rides like a dream. The True Temper OX Platinum tubing absorbs lots of road buzz, and the steel fork is just as plush as carbon.

Nice rig, Mike. I've had a Crosshairs for the past few months and really like it. It makes a pretty good commuter, too.
