Giant Seek 1

2008

Description

A solid, well-built commuter bike. Uses Shimano Alfine 8-speed internal hub gearing, which takes a little getting used to (wiiide gear range), but is so much simpler and cleaner than a derailleur. In fact, the bike itself has a very simple, clean look that I like. The Seek 1 also has the Shimano M486 hydraulic brake set, which is fantastic in the rain and being cable-less, requires little adjustment. I've added a rear rack, Ortlieb roll-ups, fenders, SPD pedals and lights with no problems or mods at all.

Pros:

  • No derailleur!
  • Only one shifter to manage
  • Solid construction, handles well
  • 700c dual wall rims
  • Powerful, controllable hydraulic disc brakes
  • Accomodates front and rear racks and fenders
  • Great ergonomic grips
  • A notable lack of stick-on advertising
Cons:
  • A little heavy, but MUCH better than my Trek 4900 as a commuter
  • No kickstand, but I'm getting used to that
  • Gearing is wide, but standing up every now and then to pedal through it is probably good for me
  • Still working out how to mount my VH100 cycle computer to the front fork (need to hack an offset to get it closer to the wheel)
